Frequently Asked Questions
-
Isn’t this just a way to make it harder for ICE to do its job?Not at all. Our tracker simply collects publicly observed reports—locations, times, and general descriptions—and shares them so community members can stay informed and make safe choices. We do not coordinate with anyone to delay or disrupt federal operations, nor do we gather personal identifiers or offer advice on evading enforcement. This tool exists purely to increase transparency around public activity and to help families plan their daily lives with greater awareness. By providing unfiltered, crowd-sourced insights, we strengthen the safety net for everyone—residents, service providers, and indeed any agency that seeks to understand community needs.
-
Can ICE shut this down? No. The ICE Tracker operates within legal boundaries, using publicly available information. It functions similarly to crime-tracking maps or police accountability databases, which are protected by laws ensuring public access to government actions.
-
Is this illegal? No, the ICE Tracker is entirely legal. The tool is designed to document publicly available information about immigration enforcement actions, similar to how crime mapping tools track police activity in communities. It does not interfere with law enforcement operations, nor does it encourage anyone to obstruct ICE’s work. Instead, it provides transparency—something that benefits everyone, regardless of political perspective. Accountability and public awareness are core principles of a healthy democracy. Just as journalists report on government actions, and legal advocacy groups monitor policies, the ICE Tracker ensures that enforcement activities are carried out fairly and accurately.
-
How do we verify sightings? All tracker entries start as community-submitted observations—date, time, general location, and any details the reporter shares (a brief description or photo). Before a sighting appears on the map our team runs it through automated checks to filter out duplicates or obvious spam, then reviews any report that seems unclear or unusual. We also look for corroboration—multiple independent submissions describing the same event, any relevant local news coverage, or community-group confirmations. While these steps help us flag likely inaccuracies, every sighting remains an advisory, crowd-sourced report rather than a definitive record. Users should consider them helpful data points for spotting trends, not proof of an enforcement action.
-
Why did we make this tool? For too long, immigration enforcement has operated in the shadows—conducting raids without warning, disrupting lives, and leaving communities scrambling for answers. The ICE Tracker flips on the lights: it’s a community-powered platform that logs publicly observed enforcement actions, highlights recurring patterns, and puts reliable information back into the hands of those it affects most. This isn’t about taking sides in a political debate; it’s about demanding transparency and preventing mistakes that destroy families. Every person deserves the certainty that their neighborhood isn’t being treated like a hunting ground. By gathering crowd-sourced reports—each one screened for plausibility before it goes live—the Tracker creates an independent record that enforcement agencies can’t ignore. When operations are visible, agencies are held to higher standards: they must be precise, they must be fair, and they must answer for the real-world impact of their tactics. The ICE Tracker isn’t here to praise or obstruct. It’s here to shine a spotlight on enforcement in action, to equip parents, students, and local leaders with the facts they need, and to ensure no one wakes up terrified because of a mistaken identity or an overzealous raid. Accountability makes us all safer.
